For over 17 years S & S Bakery has been passionate about providing excellent products and service to our customers throughout San Diego County and beyond. Our product line encompasses everything from upscale cakes and pastries to donuts, muffins, pies, and a full line of breads and rolls. Some of our customers include: Hotels, restaurants, caterers, schools, grocers (national and local) and other food service companies.
A short history: we (Jesse and Steven Fadick) got our start in the baking business by purchasing franchised distributorships from Martinos Bakery, a wholesale bakery in Burbank, California. In 1986, we agreed to move to San Diego to develop what was at the time a new market for Martinos.
In the late 1980's, Martinos Bakery was sold by the original owners and a new management team took over. To make a long story short, product quality and consistency suffered and severely impacted sales, so in 1994 we decided to take our chances and open our own bakery. Our first baking facility was a 1900 square foot space in a business park located in Pacific Beach. We installed a donut fryer and a couple of mixers, and commenced operations. Initially we only made donuts, and distributed baked goods from other bakeries. We persevered through several rough years, eventually adding additional equipment so that we could manufacture all of our products in house.
By 1997 our business had grown and we were no longer able to function in such a small space, so we moved our operations into a 15,000 square foot facility outside of downtown San Diego. We invested heavily in automated forming, sheeting and frying equipment and added several more rack ovens and auxiliary equipment. Our growth allowed us to secure contracts with schools, military institutions, health care facilities, food service operations, catering companies and more.
In 2002 we made the decision to move our facility again, and purchased a brand new 35,000 square foot shell building in Otay Mesa. Over a 5 month period we converted the space into a functioning bakery, constructed to FDA and AIB standards. We moved into our new facility in January of 2003 and continue operations there to this day.
We currently employ more than 80 people, and have a strong managerial structure with many years of experience in all aspects of baking. We are audited regularly by the FDA, the Department of Defense (for military contract certification), and we currently maintain an "Excellent" rating with the American Institute of Baking.
